    Description

1862 CONFEDERATE NEWSPAPER Fredericksburg, VA THE CHRISTIAN BANNER -Vol 1, No 2
This an original and very scarce pro-slavery Confederate state newspaper published on May 20, 1862 in Fredericksburg, Virginia during the early years of the American Civil War.  It was called The Christian Banner and was published weekly by Free Will Baptist James W. Hunnicutt who was a Unionist in the Confederate state of Virginia and who was forced to shut down his newspaper the previous year because of pressure from local secessionists who were unhappy with Hunnicutt's pro-Union views.
When the Unionists gained control of Fredericksburg from the Confederates in May of 1862, Hunnicutt was finally able to resume publication of The Christian Banner, renumbering the new issues beginning with Vol. 1, No. 1.  The issue I have for sale here is Vol. 1, No. 2, second edition, dated May 20, 1862 from the newly reissued series.  The first edition of Vol. 1, No. 2 was published on May 17th with this revised second edition being published three days later on May 20th.  Only about 2,000 copies were printed and very few have survived.  Hunnicutt was only able to continue publishing for three short months while Fredericksburg was under Union occupation and as soon as Federal troops withdrew in August 1862, Hunnicutt was forced to shut down again at which time he relocated to Philadelphia, PA.
The paper is primarily filled with accounts of the war including the following articles:
Official printed proclamation of President Abraham Lincoln lifting the blockade on the ports of Beaufort in North Carolina, Royal in South Carolina and New Orleans in Louisiana.
Long editorial entitled "Rebellion and Stubbornness."
    Gunboat fight on James River
From Fort Wright. The Rebels supposed to be evacuating the place.
    Statement of released prisoners.
The advance of Gen. McClellan, Federal fleet at work, Capture of Norfolk and Portsmouth.
From Fortress Monroe. The Merrimac blown up by the Rebels, The Monitor and other gun boats gone to Norfolk.
Capture of 180 of Morgan's Cavalry.
General Halleck's Army, Beauregard concedes the possession of the Mississippi to the Federals and orders all Rebel troops to fall back on Corinth.
    Affairs at Charleston and Norfolk.
and many other accounts of: Confederates being captured, ships being captured, skirmishes and surrenders.
One of the most interesting articles is entitled "Predictions of the Christian Banner, January 31st, 1861" from the previous year where 24 predictions are made about what will happen if the union is divided or disolved.
The 14" x 17¾" 4-page folio-size newspaper is in good condition but there is some fading in spots with various creases on the surface as well as tattered and creased edges, and the upper right corner is partially split.  Also, there are ink stains along the bottom edge with some highlighting of an article on page 3 (see photos) and the bottom border appears to be missing a small amount of text on page 3 and 4.
The newspaper wasn't printed on the common white newsprint of the era but instead had to be printed on this brown paper because of a lack of paper supply in Virginia.  According to an announcement on page 2 of this issue, "Being unable to obtain newspaper from the North we are compelled to use brown paper as a substitute.....When we closed our office twelve months ago we had on hand a very small lot of paper, all of which we worked off last week, with the exception of enough for 200 copies."  The brown paper is in good condition and is supple to the touch and easy to handle indicating that the paper is good quality compared to the acidic paper used by newspapers in later years which turns brittle and is difficult to handle without breaking it.
The newspaper is guaranteed to be a vintage original newspaper from 1862 and is NOT a modern reproduction.
Please use the photographs to judge the newspaper's condition and email or call me if you have any questions (search for "Rob McElroy" and "Buffalo, NY" on Google and you will find me or call me at the number listed under the Contact Buyer link in this listing).

    SHIPPING:
Domestic shipping is via USPS or UPS and will be calculated by eBay's shipping calculator to your particular city.
The shipping fee also includes postal insurance plus the additional fees imposed by EBay and PayPal on the shipping charges, which amounts to an additional 15% on top of the fees charged by the post office. Shipping discounts are available for multiple purchases shipped to the same address in the same box.
International buyers please note: The shipping charges you pay when purchasing this item do not include import duties, taxes, broker's fees, or other charges that may be imposed by government officials or Customs brokers in your country. Please check your country's import regulations if you want to be informed about any additional charges that may be imposed on your package when it arrives.
    PAYPAL PAYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
Visa and MasterCard are accepted through PayPal for domestic purchases. For international purchases, because of PayPal and eBay's very strict rules regarding proof-of-shipment for sellers, if you want to pay for the item using PayPal, and the item sells for less than 0.00, I can only accept a PayPal payment if you are willing to pay for USPS Priority Mail Express International or Priority Mail International shipping. They are the only on-line-trackable shipping methods offered by our US Postal System to international destinations, and an on-line-trackable shipping method is a PayPal and eBay requirement. Some countries now also track packages that are shipped using the less expensive First Class Mail International Parcel shipping service.  Please contact me if you're interested in that service and I will let you know if your country participates in the Delcon tracking program.  If the item sells for more than 0.00, then Priority Mail Express International is the ONLY shipping option available because it is the only service that requires a signature upon delivery. PayPal and eBay both require signature confirmation on packages worth more than 0.00.
Additionally (for both domestic and international purchasers), if you pay for the item using PayPal, there are two Priority Mail services I cannot offer, their Flat-Rate Envelope and Small Flat-Rate Box. Neither of these two services are trackable (or insurable), and they are therefore against PayPal and eBay's rules.
    PAYMENT OPTIONS:
EBay has made changes to their payment rules whereby (in eBay's own words) "Beginning in late October [2008], sellers will no longer be allowed to offer [any traditional person-to-person paper] payment methods on eBay. Only approved electronic methods will be allowed." As a seller, eBay now prohibits me from even using the words that describe what those traditional paper-transaction payment methods are. EBay strongly encourages all buyers to pay for their items by using PayPal (previously an eBay-owned company). I accept PayPal, and encourage you to use it, but I will not force you to use it. EBay's rules also state "A seller can accept [paper payments] from a buyer if (and only if) the buyer requests it. We will not take action against a seller who is trying to accommodate their buyer, complete a sale and be in compliance with the policy. Sellers cannot in any way solicit [paper payments] from a buyer."  So, let me be clear, I am not, in any way, soliciting you to use any payment method other than PayPal, I am simply informing you (the buyer) of all of eBay's rules, which state that if you (the buyer) request a different payment option other than PayPal, I can accept it.
