This Japanese stone lantern is hand-chiselled from a block of natural granite, using centuries-old skills by great stone carvers. Its design, structure and way of making truly stick to the Japanese tradition. As a result, each of our lanterns is born to be unique, the texture, details and crystallize patterns are one of a kind.
Please notice that this lantern is not moulded, or cast. It will not peel, decolor, or crack, actually, it could last generations in your outdoor oasis. You might be confused by similar products at a fraction of the price. Keep in mind, materials and craftsmanship cost the most. Our lanterns are hand-cut from natural blocks of granite stone, not poured from acrylic, resin, concrete, cement, hypertufa or anything else. Also, there is a type of product on the market claiming to be made from cast stone. Be careful! Cast stone or reconstructed stone is not the real stone. It is a highly refined architectural precast concrete masonry unit intended to simulate natural-cut stone.
To be authentic to the tradition, taste, feel, and appearance, our lanterns are cut out, hammer by hammer, chisel by chisel, from natural granite stone in salt and pepper colour. Unlike many cheaper lanterns moulded out from the same undetailed mould, every handmade lantern is unique, solid and stackable. On the contrary, those cookie-cut lanterns are identical, not layered and are light in weight. For example, a concrete lantern close to our size weighs only 1/8 of our lantern. and a resin one weighs only 1/15.
The total weight of our lantern is heavy, but each of them is layered and could be stacked together. Due to the materials being natural stones, the crafting, handling is both harder.
    Yukimi (
    雪見
) lantern is also known as a “snow viewing” lantern because of the beautiful capture of snowfall on the broad Umbrella. Guess it is so suitable in Canada! The origin of Yukimi lanterns dates back to the Edo era. The oldest one in Japan is in Katsura Imperial Villa near Kyoto.
In Japanese culture, Yukimi lanterns have a round shape and symbolize the cycle of life, particularly the figure of Mother. It makes a perfect gift for Mother’s Day!
Yukimi is the largest lantern in our collection. It has all the compartments except for the Holding Flower is attached to the Umbrella. The Umbrella, the Firebox and the Platform are all in circle shape, and there are eight windows on the Firebox. Since it is round, a Yukimi can face in any direction. The foundation is four-legged and spreads open.
